October - The Lord Almighty Reigns

Lyrics

There’s an endless song

Waiting to be sung

With the voice of every tribe

The sound of every tongue

When the bride of Christ

On that day of days

Brings with joy unto the Lamb

A multitude of praise

And like the roar of mighty seas

And rolls of thunder

Hear His people sing

Hallelujah, hallelujah

For the Lord almighty reigns

Hallelujah, hallelujah

For the Lord our God the almighty reigns

We will join the feast

Rest from battles won

Tell with great rejoicing all

The wonders God has done

And like the roar of mighty seas

And rolls of thunder

All the church will sing

Certain of that day

Christ we will proclaim

Oh that more would share the prize

Salvation in His name

Then greater will the anthem ring

A mighty chorus rising to the King

October Bible Memory Verse

Revelation 19:6&7, ESV

“Hallelujah! For the Lord our God the Almighty reigns. Let us rejoice and exult and give him the glory, for the marriage of the Lamb has come, and his Bride has made herself ready.”

Story Behind the Hymn

The very first hymn Keith and I ever wrote together was one about heaven called ‘There is a Higher Throne’. That was 20 years ago and we wanted to write another with that theme.

One day our biggest celebration will come when all God’s people from all parts of the world over all the centuries of time will stand together to praise Him. Revelation 19 describes what that will be like. It tells us what our words will be and so we used those for the chorus of this hymn. There are many songs in the Bible and it’s great to find ways to sing them.

The song began with a chorus idea I had recorded on a voice memo. Then over many months, alongside Matt Papa and Matt Boswell, the verses came together, word and melody. Some of the lyrics were written in Northern Ireland and some in Nashville. We wanted the melody to sound triumphant and full. We also wanted the last verse to consider how important it was to tell others of this day to come so that more would join the song!

It was first officially used at the Sing! Conference in September 2022.

Something to Think About

Do you know what the last song in the Bible is? It is found in Revelation 19. That chapter describes a day to come in the future when all the Church will sing in heaven after the last battle is won.

‘Then I heard what seemed to be the voice of a great multitude, like the roar of many waters and like the sound of mighty peals of thunder, crying out,

“Hallelujah! For the Lord our God the Almighty reigns.”

We all know how a classic fairy tale story ends with a big wedding feast. The Bible tells us that at the end of time we will know this as a real life story ending. Each time we sing together now we get a little taste of this. But one day God’s church will be like a bride ready to celebrate with the Lord, our struggles over and peace ours forever. And we will fully see how the Lord has reigned and always will. We will sing a great song of victory. It is what God’s people do to celebrate all that God has done!

CS Lewis describes it in his final Narnia book, The Last Battle:

‘…we can most truly say that they all lived happily ever after…All their life in this world and all their adventures had only been the cover and the title page: now at last they were beginning Chapter One of the Great Story which no one on earth has read: which goes on for ever: in which every chapter is better than the one before.’

Prayer

Father in heaven,

Thank you that when we sing praises to you it reminds us of our hope to come. We thank you that trusting in the Lord Jesus means one day all His followers will join the feast and sing great songs of victory!

May this fill us up with joy. May it also remind us to share this hope with others that the song of victory in heaven will be bigger and bigger!

In Jesus name,

Amen
