January - Great is Thy Faithfulness

Lyrics

Great is thy faithfulness, O God my Father.

There is no shadow of turning with thee.

Thou changest not, thy compassions, they fail not.

As thou hast been thou forever wilt be.

Great is thy faithfulness!

Great is thy faithfulness!

Morning by morning new mercies I see.

All I have needed thy hand hath provided.

Great is thy faithfulness, Lord, unto me!

Summer and winter, and springtime and harvest,

sun, moon, and stars in their courses above,

join with all nature in manifold witness

to thy great faithfulness, mercy, and love.

Pardon for sin and a peace that endureth,

thine own dear presence to cheer and to guide,

strength for today and bright hope for tomorrow;

blessings all mine, with ten thousand beside!

(Thomas O Chisholm, 1923)

January Bible Memory Verses

Lamentations 3:22-23, ESV

“The steadfast love of the Lord never ceases; his mercies never come to an end; they are new every morning; great is your faithfulness.”

Hymn Story

Thomas Obadiah Chisholm wrote over 1200 poems and ‘Great is Thy Faithfulness’ is probably the best known and loved. Mr Chisholm was born in Franklin, Kentucky in 1866. He became a school teacher when he was only 16. But it wasn’t until he was 27 that he really understood the forgiveness of the Lord Jesus and became a Christian.

He became a minister of a church. But after only one year he had to leave that job because he became quite sick. He struggled with sickness most of his life. He wrote this hymn in 1923 when he was 57 years old. It was just a few years after the Great War that swept through all the world. He had also lived through many decades of life. So he had seen very difficult times but also how God had remained faithful through them.

He sent the words to William Runyan (of Moody Bible Institute) and he wrote the melody that we enjoy singing today!

Something to Think About

I remember sitting in my car beside the Runkerry Beach in Northern Ireland on a rainy day. It was early January and I was praying to the Lord about the new year. My head was busy with many new plans but as I prayed I began to think through the things I had already promised the Lord - to follow Him, to love my husband, to tell my children about the ways of the Lord. I was remembering my promises and setting out on a new year continuing to keep them.

Just then a beautiful rainbow formed in the sky and dipped right down into the sea close to where I was sitting. Do you remember what God said about the rainbows He set in the sky? He told Noah it would remind Him and us of HIS promise to all mankind. He promised He would never again send a flood to destroy the earth and that there would be day and night and seasons as long as the earth existed.

God has made many promises and He keeps every one of them. He is always steadfast, firm, never changing, the same through and through. That is what ‘faithful’ means. Because of the Lord Jesus we can ask for forgiveness and He is faithful to forgive us (1 John 1:9). We pray that we will stay faithful to Him. Like a rainbow lifts our eyes upwards this song lifts our gaze towards Him who is faithful morning after morning.

Prayer

Father in heaven,

Thank you for your very great faithfulness. Thank you that your creation reminds us of it every day. As we read and sing Your Word we remember You are faithful especially when we look to Jesus.

Thank you for the many people who have sung these words, even long before we were born. Your promises have been passed down to us like a beautiful treasure. Help us to trust and love you more and more as each day passes.

In Jesus name,

Amen
