Day 1 - Pray for Sing! 2019

Dear Friends,

Today is four weeks until the conference! May we call each of you, along with your families and churches to begin praying for this year's conference.

Our theme (year three of our five year plan) is singing “The Life of Christ”.

This conference represents confessional churches of many backgrounds, many musical and liturgical styles, all at different stages of our journey as singing churches.

Today let’s begin praying for the overall vision of these conferences.
Singing churches: Pray that we will be encouraged and taught in a way that helps us all “sing the wondrous love of Jesus” in our lives, families and churches.

- Gospel transformation: Pray that people will be transformed in every part of their lives as we study the beautiful life and gospel of our Lord.

Grateful for the grace upon grace He has given us.

Day 2 - Pray for Sing! 2019 - Incarnation

Dear Friends,

The three days of the conference are broken into the themes of Incarnation, Easter, and Great Commission.

Today we pray for Monday and the theme of "Incarnation"

1. Pray everyone will become MORE excited about the Christmas season in their own churches. That every church represented will be impacted as a result of considering this theme. It is a unique window of opportunity our culture still affords us.

2. Pray for powerful spiritual transformation through the singing of modern hymns and carols throughout the day and the preaching from John Lennox & D.A. Carson.

3. Pray especially today for artistic inspiration and equipping; introducing hymns/carols (new and old), the choir and orchestra, the interview with composer J.A.C. Redford (an extraordinary story of a Hollywood film composer who converted to Christianity from Mormonism), the concerts (Handel’s Messiah, Irish Christmas at the Opry) and all the conversations and connections people will make.

The Christmas season brings a chance for fresh creativity, witnessing and helping our families, churches and communities sing many of the greatest hymns ever written.

Day 3 - Pray for Sing! 2019 - Easter

Dear Friends,

Thanks so much for opening this email and praying for our conference. On Tuesday at the conference we will look at the Easter story.

  1. Pray for a clear, fresh understanding of the gospel and desire to live wholeheartedly for it - for every musician, worship leader and pastor (and for Mark Dever & John MacArthur who have kindly agreed to speak).

  2. Pray for the artistic and practical impact - from the pastor/worship leader discussion, to the choirs, to the new songs, ideas for Easter and the principle of ensuring that every service throughout the year is shaped and defined by the gospel.

  3. After the seminars, Tuesday finishes with a celebration of the resurrection with John Piper, Joni Eareckson Tada, Andrew Peterson, a choir of 1000 and other special guests. It will be at the Bridgestone Arena and also open to the city of Nashville - pray for a celebration that draws many to the Lord.

Day 4 - Pray for Sing! 2019 - The Great Commission and the Return of Christ

Say among the nations, “The Lord reigns." - Psalm 96:10 (NIV)

Dear Friends,

  1. We are excited to join what and how we sing with our witness and mission. Helping churches think about this in clear ways is so very strategic and key to both singing and music ministries everywhere.

  2. Pray also for the participants - Os Guinness, Joni Eareckson Tada and the international contributors, including Conrad Mwebe, as well as a unique interview with Anne Graham Lotz (which we are taping on Monday) where she reflects on her father's legacy as part of the Great Commission and the priority he, Bev Shea and Cliff Barrows placed on congregational singing with evangelism.

  3. Pray for the internationals at this years conference (from over 30 countries attending plus an anticipated audience from 100+ countries via Livestream). Pray for those representing all of these international ministries and especially for those from China.

Dear Friends,

Let’s pray today for the event to spark fresh material for churches to sing:

  1. Pray for the writers still writing and finishing songs on the themes for this year.

  2. Pray for the collection of 30 songs we hope to be available by October 1st. We are calling it the “Life of Christ Quintology” - five collections of six hymns each, paralleling the themes of the conference - incarnation, death, resurrection, Great Commission and heaven. We hope these thirty old and new hymns will be a way of really singing the basics of our faith to each other for many years to come.

Day 6 - Pray for Sing! 2019 - Choirs, Orchestra, and Handel’s Messiah

Dear Friends,

Today we focus on the choir & orchestral programs:

  1. Today we pray for Jonathan Rea, Deborah Klemme, David Kim and all those who lead and participate in the choir and orchestra programs at Sing! Pray they help to inspire singing, as well as the beauty and artistry which points us all to the Lord in a powerful way.

  2. Pray for all the instrumentalists, choir members, creatives, leaders who are involved in local church music ministry on a weekly basis for whom we pray that Sing! will be an oasis and an inspiration to encourage their love of the Lord and their art.

  3. Pray for the Handel’s Messiah “Sing” on Monday night. Pray for a beautiful experience for all as we begin what we hope will be an annual event.

Dear Friends,

Monday night features two different concert experiences, Handel's Messiah in one room and our annual "Irish Christmas" concert at the Grand Ole Opry House. This is our annual Christmas show, and we'll play a special 90-minute version twice on Monday night.

  1. For the evangelistic impact of this event - both for the live performances and also for the new video recording being made that night by TBN. The Irish Christmas concert has run on US public television and on the BBC in the UK for three years, and we're excited for the new global opportunities that come with this new partnership with TBN.

  2. Pray for the artistry of the band as they polish new arrangements and as we also add new collaborations, including Trip Lee on “O Children Come”.

  3. Pray that the singing of these timeless carols at Christmas will reach a new generation of people when hearts are most open during this season of the year.

Day 9 - Pray for Sing! 2019 - Sunday Night Hymn Sing

Dear Friends,

We are excited to be launching the inaugural Nashville Hymn Sing on Sunday night before the Sing! Conference.
I'd like to encourage all of you to pray and also consider participating in this. It will truly be an unforgettable evening!

  1. The second half of the evening will be an a cappella hymn sing led by Joni Eareckson Tada. She will share well-known hymns from her journey and lead us (along with 250 singers on stage with her) in a hymn sing in four-part harmony. Anyone who was at the first Sing! Conference will remember this was a highlight of the event. Please pray for deep ministry as Joni shares her unique experiences. And pray for an appreciation of great hymns too.

  2. Please pray for Joni's health. It will be her first plane journey in a long time. Given her fragile medical state, pray for her health. Also, we all give thanks for her passion to share and lead in this event.

  3. The first half features a Nashville-style songwriters night, with seven writers we work with - introducing their modern hymns and the stories behind the songs. It will be a truly fascinating evening, including Stuart Townend talking about "How Deep the Father's Love For Us" and Matt Boswell and Matt Papa talking about their new album, "His Mercy Is More" and sharing songs from the album. Pray for our team as we introduce this group of extraordinary writers and the work they are doing.

Today we pray with gratitude for the internationals attending the conference.

  1. Give thanks for people from over 50 nations attending. Pray for practical concerns, for the conference to strengthen and impact every community represented.

  2. Pray for the many more nations that will watch on livestream. Pray for many to find out, connect and enjoy the livestream.

  3. Pray that those of us based in the USA will become more “global” in our vision for the church, build new relationships, and that the Sing! Conference will continue to have a big, sacrificial, servant vision to being part of God's church in the world today.

Dear Friends,

We are just finishing a conference call with the leadership team for the Sing! conference:

  1. It is truly breathtaking the amount of work, led by the leadership team at Getty Music (Josh Sutton, Greg McNey, James Ainscough, Joni McCabe who lead our whole team), Yellow Brick Events who manage the conference (Elizabeth Graham and her extraordinary group) and Streamline Productions who manage all sound, lights and staging (led by Justin Zebell). Please pray for the mountain of work, decision making, and pressure these people carry as we head into the last weeks. Pray for their own spiritual vitality with all the pressure.

  2. Pray that all who attend the conference will feel served. Between the Sing conference and concerts, the number of attendees is significantly above 13,000 people. Pray that people will be well-served in an atmosphere that is conducive to creativity, collaboration, clarity with a deep sense of devotion and joy.

  3. Pray for a spirit of learning. That each year Sing! will become better at serving attendees and equipping churches through the gathering.

Day 12 - Pray for Sing! 2019 - Children’s Leadership Pre-Conference

Dear Friends,

One of the most important events at the conference is the Children’s Leadership pre-conference from 1:00-6:00pm on Sunday.

We strongly encourage all of you to attend if you are in town early. It is a free event at the Opryland Hotel.

Please pray today for this:

  1. Give thanks for the partnership and generosity of the Virginia Martin Howard Foundation who work alongside us to encourage the next generation of children to be deep believers from the songs we sing. Give thanks also for the vision and diligence of Josh Sutton to grow this.

  2. The event is attended primarily by children’s leaders from the worlds of education, family ministry and local church. Pray that every church, school and para church ministry take what we sing more seriously because of this event.

  3. Pray for all the participants - from Sally Lloyd Jones to the children’s choir to artist Ross Wilson, musicians including Ellie Holcomb and Kristyn’s uncle John Lennox (who was a student of CS Lewis). Pray that this conference is both deep and inspiring, as well as hugely practical for all who attend both from the children’s ministry group and to everyone else attending the conference.

Dear Friends,

Over the years, we’ve found some of the greatest benefits of the conference have remained the friendships we have made with fellow leaders and the resources we have taken home.

Sing is a unique fusion of theology, arts, pastors and worship leaders and so there is a unique collection of people and resources.

Kristyn and I were introduced to each other by Professor John Lennox (Kristyn's uncle) many years ago. John is the Professor of Mathematics (Emeritus) at Oxford University, Emeritus Fellow and Pastoral Adviser of Green Templeton College, and an incredible apologist for the Christian faith.

This year we are honored to have him joining us at the conference.

Today we pray for Mark Dever:

  1. Give thanks for Mark - we first met him as students in England and he was so helpful. His preaching, alongside his work at Capitol Hill Baptist, with 9 Marks and T4G have been a gift to so many pastors and churches. We’re also thrilled for the hymns that have come out of his church - both their use of traditional hymns and the hymns from Matt Merker.

  2. Pray for his critical message on how the Gospel shapes our services and our singing.

  3. Pray for the interview that follows called “The Pastor and the Musician” where we interview Jim Thomas & Tommy Bailey, HB Charles & Joe Pace, and Mark Dever & Matt Merker. The relationship between a pastor and his music team is so critical - we all believe this interview is potentially transformative.

As we pray for the speakers this week, we pray today for John MacArthur:

  1. Give thanks for the life and faithfulness of John MacArthur and how we had helped so many see Christ with depth and clarity. Give thanks also for his work at helping churches sing - most recently through the “Hymns of Grace” hymnal which has helped form the diet of so many churches here and abroad as they plan for their Sunday services.

  2. Pray for John as he preaches on the death and sufferings of Christ.

  3. Pray for pastors, artists, and worship leaders - that all of us are inspired to think of the Gospel in more rich and full ways as we live and prepare for each Sunday, because of this talk.

Dear Friends,

We pray for John Piper today as he prepares for the conference.

  1. Give thanks for John Piper - for his teaching of the scriptures, for the continuation of his work through Desiring God Ministries, for the number of Christian leaders in the world for whom his influence has been significant, and indeed for his partnership earlier this year at the Belfast Arena and Edinburgh events.

  2. Pray for the Spirit's leading in preparation, the Spirit's empowering during preaching, and for lasting spiritual fruit.

  3. Pray for his talk, The Explosive Power of the Resurrection on Tuesday night at Bridgestone Arena - that both Christian and non-Christians from the City of Nashville who come to the event will be confronted clearly and beautifully with the Gospel.

  4. Pray also for the breakout session, Ask Pastor John that John is leading on Wednesday morning.

Dear Friends,

Please take time this Sunday to pray for Christians from around the world attending Sing! and also for the international speakers coming to the conference.

  1. Pray for all the international speakers and musicians who will participate - Conrad Mbewe (Zambia), Lydia Song (China), Pedro Eustache (Venezuela), Tavi Jinariu (Romania), Carlos Garcia (Dominican Republic), Rogers Peralta (Dominican Republic) and others.

  2. Pray for the impact of the interviews with Anne Graham Lotz and Joni Eareckson Tada.

  3. Pray again for the internationals attending (over 50 nations) and watching via livestream (anticipating over 100 nations represented).

  1. Our biggest prayer for the Breakout Sessions is that they will make a DIFFERENCE in the life of local churches

Day 23 - Pray for Sing! 2019 - Writers, New Songs, and New Albums

He put a new song in my mouth,
a hymn of praise to our God.
Many will see and fear the Lord

Dear Friends,

Pray this last week for the new songs being written, for the new projects we make, and for their use in churches around the world to help build mature believers and strong churches:

  1. Pray especially for our writing team - Matt Merker, Matt Papa, Matt Boswell, Jordan Kauflin alongside Kristyn, myself and Stuart Townend as we finish songs.

  2. Pray for the His Mercy Is More collection of Matt Boswell and Matt Papa songs, pray for The Life of Christ - a Quintology of hymns we hope will help churches sing of the great truths of our Lord in beautiful ways. Pray also for our Getty band and Village Chapel church band who play so beautifully to make these recordings so extraordinary.

  3. Pray for an increased vision for this work for all attending - for those who go to the Sunday evening Hymn Sing at the Grand Ole Opry House to especially get a great vision for what these songwriters are creating and for the songs they present at the Hymn Sing and throughout the conference. May the next generation of songwriters be emerging through this event.

Day 24 - Pray for Sing! 2019 - 2020 and 2021

1 Shout for joy to the Lord, all the earth.

Dear Friends,

We are so excited to share much of what is happening with Sing 2020 and Sing 2021. Much of the planning is underway and will be a focus for many in leadership even at this year’s event.

  1. Pray for Sing! 2020 as we sing through the Scriptures. This event will take us through the Bible on day one, before looking at how the Bible effects every part of our Sunday worship service (singing, praying, reading and preaching). Day three looks at how singing and knowing the Bible affects all of 21st century society - focusing on children, younger and older generations, and culture. Pray for the new initiatives and how we partner with the online learning, global foundation, college partnerships, and a continuing extension of our creative initiatives.

  2. Pray for Sing! 2021 as we look at singing through the ages and as we plan for the future.

  3. Pray that in all the vision we stay grounded and focused on strengthening individuals, families and churches for the Glory of Christ.

Well, we are almost here.

As we all travel or prepare to travel today:

  1. Pray for preparation - both for those of us who are presenting and for all of those attending.

  2. Pray for safety in travel - especially for those traveling internationally. There are over fifty nations represented on-site at the conference.

  3. Pray for family and church we leave behind - that they will know the Lord's protection and blessing during our absence while attending Sing!

  4. Pray for the new project His Mercy Is More which released yesterday - an extraordinary collection of hymns released by Matt Papa and Matt Boswell.

Dear Friends,

Welcome to the Conference!
Today we bring five prayer requests - please join us in praying for these...

  1. Pray for our churches - some of us visiting other churches today, others leaving immediately after the service - May each of us use this time to rededicate ourselves to serving Christ in His church wherever they are, and pray for the strengthening of our churches through everything that happens.

  2. Pray for the children’s leadership pre-conference this afternoon - for all the speakers, musicians and administrators; and also for all the homes, churches, para-church groups, family ministries and educational groups represented. How we need to pray that our children or grandchildren will let the Word of Christ dwell richly in them.

  3. Pray for the Hymn Sing tonight - pray for the performers and for Joni Eareckson Tada - what a privilege that this is to have her with us, her first appearance since her illness - what an unforgettable night it will be.

  4. Pray for all the other pre-conference events and setup - Pilgrim's Progress movie screening, all of the exhibitors and their setup today, the tech teams, the room setup crew, the Sing! Choir rehearsals, and the setup for check-in that begins today.

  5. Pray for our wonderful team of Sing! staff and volunteers for the sheer volume of work they have over the next 96 hours. We are all so grateful for them.
